Tips for Confident Singing and Performance
The theory behind singing.
Posture and Relaxation.
The importance of correct posture and being relaxed explained.
What is a good posture for singing? Why relaxation and feeling relaxed helps to improve singing.
Voice carries so much information about us and how we feel so it is very important to release tensions from the body to feel nice and relaxed before you start singing, although singing also can be very relaxing and therapeutic.
When you are relaxed you are able to breath in more air, sing more free, control your voice better and it is also healthier for your vocal cords. Correct posture is also very important. It allows you to inhale deeper, breath in a more relaxed way, and control the exhale better.
In this section you will find a 4 minutes meditation for singers to guide you through posture adjustment and awareness, deepening your breath in preparation for singing, releasing any tension and feeling relaxed and ready to sing.
This is a simple relaxation and posture awareness meditation for singers. You can also find mp3 recording of it to download in the resources.
Breathing for Singing.
Controlling the breath coming from the diaphragm.
As you breath in, the lungs expand and diaphragm is pushed down and your belly moves out. When you exhale, the diaphragm moves up and belly moves back in. Breathing from the diaphragm means to inhale more air. It is very important to train your diaphragm.
In this section you will find two breathing exercises that are designed for you to connect to your breathing, deepen the inhalation, use diaphragm to breath in a relaxed way, train the controlled exhalation and work on expanding your lung capacity.
There are many benefits of developing correct breathing techniques: better breath control, better quality of the voice, less breathiness in your voice, better ability to sustain notes and sing longer phrases, increased volume, improved endurance and elimination of tension and straining of the vocal cords. Which is really important not only for your singing techniques and better sound but also for your voice to function in a healthy way.
This is a Breath Awareness Exercise designed to help you to come back to your natural deep breathing, to breath using your diaphragm, to identify if you breath 'shallow' in your chest and bring yourself back to your relaxed and deep breathing ready to start singing.
This is a great breathing exercise that helps with
1. Finding your deep breath
2. Train and strengthen your diaphragm
3. Train your exhalation (to develop long, controlled exhalation to support your voice)
4. Expand lung-capacity
5.Develop the breathing using your diaphragm
Warming Up The Voice Before Singing.
Why is it important to warm up your voice?
When you sing you use the vocal cords (soft tissue) and the inner muscles of the larynx (the muscles that control the closing of your cords). We need to stretch and relax the muscles before we sing, just as we would warm up before going for a run or lifting weights. Warming up loosens those muscles, helps to remove excess mucous and reduces the risk of injury. Warming up is important to wake up your vocal cords.
In this section you will find three very effective warm ups you can use in your daily practice or every time before you start singing or doing more complex singing exercises.
Your complete warm up routine that you can use before you start singing or doing more complex singing exercises.
Please remember:
Inhale deep, using your diaphragm
Push your belly out with inhalation
Keep your belly strong when you sing
Throat is open, neck is relaxed
Don't push the volume, we are just warming up, so be gentle
Tongue is relaxed resting at the bottom
Remember about the posture, stand or sit straight
Connect the notes with a nice flow and don't push the top notes, keep them at the same volume as everything else.
!!!Always listen to your body!!! If you feel it's too high for you, just stop and observe your body, you will get there eventually, just be patient.
Use your index fingers by placing them in the middle of your cheeks and gently pressing. This will help with lip rolling.
In the downloadable materials you will find 3 separate audio files of each warm up.
